Edinburgh Airport is six miles to the west of the city itself and is Scotland’s biggest and busiest, handling over 10 million passengers a year travelling to and from over 140 domestic and international locations. It’s served by the M8 motorway and A8 road and has excellent communications with the rest of Scotland, especially if you are arranging car hire from Edinburgh Airport. This is also a great way to visit the whole Lothians region, which has wide selection of museums covering everything from the history of Scottish mining, to the story of flight.
As the capital of Scotland Edinburgh is a major financial centre with a strong economy and many grand buildings to admire almost everywhere you go. One of the grandest of these is the castle which stands high above the so-called Old Town of the city and is where the famous military tattoo is held each year. There are also two excellent art galleries in the heart of the city, the National Gallery of Scotland and the Scottish Portrait Gallery, while the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is a little way outside the centre, so hiring a car from Edinburgh Airport might be an idea.
