The city of Edinburgh stands near the north-western coast of the United Kingdom. It is the capital of Scotland, which is the northern part of the UK, and the city retains a Scottish identity. If you rent a car you’ll find that Edinburgh stands on the southern side of a large inlet called the Firth of Forth. It occupies a hilly site leading down to the waterfront. Driving around this busy city is helped by a southern bypass, the A720, which loops round the outskirts. To cross to the northern side of the Forth, you’ll find there’s only one car bridge, the A90 Forth Road Bridge at Queensferry.
Edinburgh may be smaller than London, but the Scottish capital is in no way over-shadowed. It’s a beautiful historic city that is renowned for its culture. The visitor highlights include the imposing hilltop castle, the Queen’s residence at Holyrood Palace and the dormant volcano known as ‘Arthur’s Seat’. Also look out for the Queen’s former Royal Yacht Britannia moored down at the Leith waterfront and the landmark Princes Street Gardens in the city centre.
