The Italian city of Venice stands in the north east of the country. The historic city spreads across scores of islands in the Venice Lagoon. If you’re hiring a car from Venice Marco Polo Airport, you’ll find that it has been built on a flat area on the mainland shore of the lagoon. It’s about five miles from the main heart of Venice and serves as the city’s premier international airport – well-placed if you’re a culture vulture and keen to take in all of the area’s sights. The A57 motorway is close by giving easy access to Padua to the south west.
Rent a car from Venice Marco Polo Airport and you’ll be able to drive around the mainland parts of the city and much of the coastal lido strip. The SS11 gives access to the island city itself but only to the car parks at the entrance of the island of Santa Croce. To get further into old Venice, you’ll need to walk or take a water taxi. There are plenty of great sights once you’re there, though, including the Doge’s Palace, the Rialto Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs. And St Mark’s Square, at the heart of the city, is one of the world’s most photographed spots.
