Romantic, mysterious, awe inspiring – there really aren’t enough words to express what a unique city Venice really is. But one thing is for certain: a single visit is just not enough. The obvious place to begin in Venice would be St Mark’s Square with its huge and impressive basilica which dates back to the 9th century. Adorned with Byzantine domes and no less than 8000 square metres of beautiful mosaic, it is stunning in every respect. No visit to Venice would be complete without a gondola ride down the Grand Canal and you’re sure to find many gondoliers, almost like the city’s taxi drivers, who are only too happy to escort you. And, while hiring a car in Venice may seem to be an unlikely thing to do, one big advantage is that you will also be able to explore the other major cities of the Veneto including Verona and Treviso.
