You’ll find the city of Sheffield in the northern part of England, in the county of Yorkshire. The city is famous for its steel and cutlery industry as well as its coalmines. Both industries have almost disappeared now but if you have a hire car in Sheffield you’ll find that it has become one of the UK’s greenest cities. To the west, the city outskirts climb into the wild hills of the Peak District National Park; while to the east there’s the M1 motorway giving great road access to Leeds to the north and London, which is a 170-mile drive to the south.
This former hotspot of heavy industry is now dotted with huge green spaces. If you explore Sheffield in your car rental you’ll soon start noticing the trees - in fact, the city now has more trees per head of population than any city in Europe. With its lively city centre, modern shopping malls and trendy cultural life, Sheffield has turned from being an industrial centre to a popular attraction for visitors. Look out for the relics of the industrial past though: you can still find them at acclaimed museums like Kelham Island and Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet.
