The enormous town of Milton Keynes stands in central southern England, 55 miles northwest of London. It’s famous throughout Britain as a modern planned ‘over-spill’ urban area for London, developed on a grid pattern in the Sixties. Milton Keynes car hire allows you to discover the town was built to incorporate the rural Buckinghamshire villages of Bletchley, Wolverton and Stony Stratford, which are now districts of the town. This unusual level of planning for the UK means the transport links are exceptional: the M1 motorway runs through the eastern side of the city, and there is a clear and easy road network.
If you have a hire car in Milton Keynes, it’s interesting to simply drive around the town seeing how it was planned and constructed. The whole area is dotted with public art and acclaimed architecture. Look out for the ‘Redways’, a completely separate 125-mile network of cycling and pedestrian routes, and the ‘linear parks’ along the River Ouse that run right through the centre. The planners planted 20 million trees around their new creation. Other attractions include the Grand Union Canal and a huge ‘National Bowl’ open-air cultural venue. Elsewhere don’t miss the inspiring relics of wartime Enigma code-breaking at Bletchley Park.
