Basel Airport is officially called the EuroAirport of Basel Mulhouse Freiburg. It stands in the far south east corner of France but very close to the borders of both Switzerland and Germany. If you hire a car at Basel Airport you’ll find that it really serves three different cities, hence the name. The Swiss city of Basel is just three miles to the south-east; Mulhouse in France is 20 miles to the north-west; and Freiburg im Breisgau in Germany is 45 miles to the north. It’s one of the few airports that is administered by two countries, following an agreement made in 1949.
Visitors who hire a car at the EuroAirport of Basel Mulhouse Freiburg will be able to drive off into one of the three countries surrounding the airport. The road connections are good: the A35 motorway runs right alongside the runway, linking the Basel ring road to the south with Mulhouse to the north. The A2 heads north into Germany. Visitors to Basel in Switzerland often find parts of the city extend into one of the other countries. The city has an industrial reputation but is a major cultural centre too. Look out for theatres, concert halls, galleries and museums all over the city.
