You’ll find the city of Alicante on the south-eastern coast of Spain. It’s the unofficial capital of the Costa Blanca tourist area and, if you’ve got a hire car, you’ll find Alicante is situated between the busy resorts of Benidorm and Torrevieja. It’s a modern city standing on the coastal plain with mountains beyond. You’ll find it’s a regional transport hub. There’s an international airport six miles southwest of the city and a seaport too, which offers ferries to the Balearic Islands.
Many visitors arrive at the airport and head off to one of the Costa Blanca resorts but Alicante is worth visiting whatever your plans. It combines several roles: it’s a seaport, University City, regional centre, commercial hub and tourist resort. With car rental in Alicante, you’ll find it’s an interesting place to explore. To start with, there’s a fine sandy beach and the tree-lined Esplanade promenade, and a harbour full of ferries, fishing boats and luxury yachts. Other highlights include the Castillo de Santa Barbara overlooking the seafront, the Museum of Contemporary Art with a good collection of Picasso and Dali works, and the lively all-night restaurants and clubs.
