Beautiful scenery, rare wildlife and attractive adventures is what dreams, and Dunedin is made of. Although it is a major university city, the town is very tourist-friendly and rest assured you’ll be spoiled for choice on what to do there. What are you waiting for? Take your rental car and let’s go explore Dunedin!
Lucky for us, Dunedin is a magnet for the world’s rarest wildlife. Head over to Otago Peninsula in your rental car, only a short drive away from Dunedin. You can spot many forms of flora and fauna as you take a leisurely stroll along the beach. For our hardcore addicts, take a wildlife spotting tour and be treated with adorable penguin colonies and seals basking in the sun. Travel in Dunedin just got so enjoyable.
If you prefer to be more active, you can head over to Signal Hill, easily accessible from Dunedin town centre in your rental car. Hike up to the summit and be rewarded with panoramic views of the entire city, framed by a backdrop of mountains. You can choose to mountain bike up the hill too, if you want to push your limits and break a sweat. We promise the (somewhat) bumpy ascent will be worth it because Dunedin’s panoramas are not to be missed.
Travel to Otago Museum Dunedin for a quick look into the city’s rich Maori heritage. Explore natural history and native culture with the aid of vivid galleries and exhibits that transport you back in time. Located only 23km away from Dunedin airport, it should be a breeze to travel there in your rental car. Best of all, admission is free or a voluntary donation can be made.
Travel in Dunedin is not complete without a visit to the steepest street in the world. That’s right, that seemingly impossible trick-eye-esque residential street you’ve seen all over the internet. Baldwin Street is a trippy, tricky street you’ll regret not visiting. The street holds annual Jaffa races down at the Cadbury Chocolate Festival. Can a town get any more adorable? Bonus: it’s only 30 minutes away from Dunedin Airport, so there won’t be any trouble getting there in your rental car.
Head over down to Tunnel Beach for a peek at Mother Nature’s wonder, which is just off Blackhead Road in South Dunedin accessible by your rental car. If you want to experience real travel in Dunedin, you can catch a bus down to the coast on one of five routes available. Natural sandstone cliffs, archways, and pillars loom over visitors as you marvel at how this coastal niche has been carved out of the sheer cliff walls. Better yet, Dunedin is one of the very few places in New Zealand where you can watch the Southern Lights. If you’re lucky, catch the blinding display of solar activity from the beach as you hear waves lapping gently against the shore. Dunedin travel just go upgraded so many notches.
