The Italian capital Rome stands in the middle section of the country’s peninsular, on the River Tiber, about 15 miles from its mouth on the Mediterranean Sea. Rome has two main international airports. If you’re hiring a car at Rome’s Ciampino Airport, you’ll find it stands just outside the orbital motorway, the Grande Raccordo Anulare. This means that the single-terminal airfield is about eight miles to the south east of the centre of Rome, via the SS7 arterial road which leads direct to the Piazza dei Re di Roma. Note that locals sometimes call Ciampino the GB Pastine Airport.
Hiring a car from Rome’s Ciampino Airport means you will be able to drive into the centre of the city and its famous historic attractions, or skirt around the inevitable capital city traffic by using the GRA ring road. This will give you access to all areas of the city and the surroundings too, like the old port of Ostia, or the beaches of the Mediterranean coast. In Rome itself, of course, there are some world famous sights. Highlights include the Vatican City and Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum and the Forum. But don’t forget the colourful atmosphere of modern Rome. There are exciting boutiques, lively restaurants and fabulous markets to explore too.
