The city of Pisa stands five miles inland from Italy’s western coast on the River Arno. If you’re hiring a car at Pisa Airport, which is sometimes called Galileo Galilei Airport by locals, you’ll soon find you’re at the main airport in the Tuscany region. With a car, you’ll be able to drive straight into the city centre – it’s just three miles to the north. The road connections to the airport are good and you’ll be able to explore surrounding areas easily. For example, to the west are the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean coast and the protected dunes of Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli National Park.
Most people who arrange car hire from Pisa Airport want to head for one famous historic attraction. You can see the Leaning Tower from the airport but beware that it is always a popular lure for international visitors. Parking will be difficult close to the site. But the good news is that Pisa is full of other great but lesser-known landmarks, and parking and walking to the Leaning Tower will give you a fantastic chance to explore this beautiful place. The Tower itself stands alongside the Duomo Cathedral and a beautiful circular Baptistery. Meanwhile, look out for the fabulously ornate Chiesa di Santa Maria della Spina, a marble chapel on the banks of the Arno.
