You’ll find the city of Cagliari on the south coast of the Italian island of Sardinia. It’s the capital of the island that lies in the Mediterranean to the west of Italy. If you pick up a hire car at Cagliari Elmas Airport you’ll enjoy a scenic five-mile drive into the city centre. The airport stands on the eastern shore of the Stagno di Cagliari lagoon at the mouths of the rivers Cixerri and Mannu, with the city easily reached via the SS130 from right outside the entrance. Cagliari possesses some of Sardinia’s most historic sites and makes for a dream sightseeing tour.
With a hire car from the airport, it’s easy to explore Cagliari itself and the beach resorts along the coast of the south of Sardinia. Here you’ll find it’s a major port and tourist centre, as well as an important cultural and commercial hub for the island, with many historical attractions that demonstrate the city’s steep history. They date from a Carthaginian necropolis to harbour fortifications built by Sardinia’s Hapsburg rulers. But there’s also a five-mile sandy beach and plenty of lively shops, restaurants and galleries to discover. And don’t forget that Cagliari is also a centre for theatre, opera and live music.
