Brindisi is a city in the southeastern corner of Italy; on what is often called ‘the heel’ it sits on the Adriatic coast of the Apulia region. If you pick up a hire car at Brindisi Airport you’ll enjoy a short drive into the old heart of Brindisi and the harbour. It’s so close you could probably walk, but having a car allows you to tour the area too: highlights of the region include the white hill town of Ostuni, a short drive to the west, and the historic city of Lecce to the south.
If you have a hire car at Brindisi Airport you can easily explore the rocky coves along this stretch of coastline and the old city itself, which stands at the end of the famous Via Appia from Rome, an ancient highway dating back 2,000 years. You can still drive along the straight stretch that ends on the Brindisi waterfront, where there’s a landmark column marking the world’s first highway right next to the harbour. Other highlights of this ancient port include the harbour fortifications dating back 800 years, the medieval Romanesque cathedral and the various Roman relics dotted around the city.
